Summary of steps:
- Step 1: Validate: user = administrator. The user and the computer name must be different.
- Step 2: Validate the “Windows Service Pack” version
- Step 3: Validate the Windows
First, verify that you are an administrator of the workstation in question. To find out, go to the “Start” menu in the bottom left-hand corner and click on “Control Panel”.
Note the name indicated at the top right-hand corner below the logo (in this case, V2V Technologies), since this is your user name.
- Click on “User Accounts and Protection”.
- In the next window that appears, click on “User Accounts”.
- You will then see your account; if this account indicates “Computer Administrator” (as indicated above), this means that you can make changes and you will be allowed to install the GEM-CAR software. On the contrary, contact your network administrator to get access.
Verify that your user name is different than that of the computer. For example, the user name cannot be “Server” if the computer’s name is “Server”.
- To verify this, you must click on the “Start” menu that is found at the bottom left-hand corner.
- Then, right-click on “Computer”.
- Click on “Properties”.
- You will then see the “General System Information” window.
In this case, you will see that the computer’s name is “GEM-CAR” and that it is part of the “WORKGROUP” work group (as illustrated below). Since you noted in step 1 that the user name (administrator) is “V2V Technologies”, everything is correct since the computer’s name and the user name are different.
Also note that it is either 32 bits or 64 bits (here, it is 32 bits).
Verify whether Service Pack 1 is installed. To do so, right-click again on “Computer” and then on “Properties” like you did previously. If Service Pack 1 is indicated in the appropriate location (see illustration below), this means it is correct.
If Service Pack 1 is not installed, enter the following address in your Web search bar:
On the Microsoft site, choose the language and click on the “Download” button.
For the next step, you must choose (check the box) the file that corresponds to your system.
- In the case of a 64-bit system, choose the file ending in X64.exe.
- In the example used, it is a 32-bit system; choose the file ending in X86.exe (see the next illustration).
- Then click on the “Next” button at the bottom right of the Web page.
Internet Explorer may be protected to control downloads, as indicated in this illustration:
If this is the case:
- Right-click on the warning (the yellow bar that says, “Pop-up blocked...”).
- Click on “Always allow pop-ups from this site...”.
- Click on “Yes” in the next window.
You will then see the “File download” window.
- Click on “Run” and Service Pack 1 will be installed.
- Restart the computer after the installation is complete to activate the changes.
Your Windows 7 must also be up to date, meaning that the latest updates must be made. To see if any are available:
- Click on the “Start” menu.
- Next, right-click on “Computer” and choose “Properties”.
- Once in the “General System Information” window, click on “Windows Update” on the bottom left.
- The “Windows Update” window will indicate the number of updates available.
- Click on “Install updates”.
- The updates will download and will then install.
You will probably have to restart your computer.
- Click on “Restart now”.
After restarting the computer, your system will activate the updates and you will be ready to install GEM-CAR.
