You can setup your outgoing mail server (SMTP) in 2 ways in GEM-CAR:

  1. Using the SMTP server from your Internet provider (ex: Vidéotron, Bell, etc...)
  2. Using the SMTP server from your email provider (ex: Hotmail, YourDomainName.com, etc...)

1. Configuration using SMTP server from your Internet provider

Advantage(s):

  • Simple
  • No username and password required
  • No specific port required. (GEM-CAR uses by default the standard port 25 for outgoing mail)
  • No SSL required

Inconvenience(s):

Since you are not using a username and password to identify yourself on the server before sending mail,

  • Your sent emails might end up in the "Spam" (or "Junk Mail") folder of your customer's mailbox.
  • Your Internet provider might block your email address from sending for a certain period if they noticed massive or suspicious mailing.

Configuration in GEM-CAR

In the main menu, go to "Configuration > General Information",

  • In the section called "Internet" on the right side, enter your Internet provider's SMTP address (ex: relais.videotron.ca - for Vidéotron),
  • Enter your E-mail address,
  • In this case, the field "User Name" represents the name that you want to be displayed when you send mail. (ex: In your customers mailbox, it will show "Mail from: GEM-CAR Garage"),
  • Click on the diskette to save.

2. Configuration using SMTP server from the email provider

Advantage(s):

  • Reduce the risk of the sent mails to end up in the "Spam" (or "Junk Mail") folder of your customers mailbox.
  • Reduce the risk of being blocked bu the email provider since you are authenticating yourself (Username and password) on the server before sending.

Inconvenience(s):

  • Username and password required,
  • SMTP server address of the email provider is required (ex: smtp-mail.outlook.com ou smtp.yourgarage.com, etc...)
  • Specific port number might be needed (ex: 587) / with SSL security or not.

Note: Recently, email providers (ex: GMail, Outlook, Hotmail, etc...) will block your account from sending mail through a software unless you authorize it on your account for security and privacy purpose. (ex: Even if I put correctly my GMail credentials and the right settings in GEM-CAR to send mail, GMail will detect that a software is using my account and block it until I got to my GMail account online and accept or authorize GEM-CAR to use my account. In GMail, if you want to deactivate this option permanently for the future with other software configuration, click >>> Deactivate the secure apps option )
